B.C. on fire
B.C. forest fires continue to burn throughout the province as crews of firefighters from across the country work to minimize the threats to communities in their path. The task facing fire fighters is not an easy one, according to SFU kinesiology instructor Jim Carter, who researches heat stress and physical activity and is also a Port Coquitlam firefighter. He can look at issues such as dealing with heat stress and the elements as well as the job’s physical effects. SFU biologist Alton Harestad is watching the effects of the fires on wildlife and their habitats. Meanwhile, forest fire expert Ken Lertzman, director of SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management, is away for the month of August but is checking media inquiries via email at kenneth_lertzman@sfu.ca.
