Biofuels - Substitute for Petroleum?
Experts from industry and academia will consider the role of biofuels in a sustainable future when they meet on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at SFU Vancouver’s Harbour Centre campus (7000 Earl & Jenny Lohn Rolicy Room). “Given a resurgence of oil prices, the ongoing development of blending requirements for ethanol across the world, and a recent wave of bad press about biofuels as a menace to farmers and food prices, the discussion will be timely,” says SFU political scientist Anil Hira. Other participants include representatives from the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, the BC Bioenergy Network and the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Reserves. Hira can provide an assessment of the discussions.

Election in the wind?
Heading back to the polls may be a reality this fall if the Liberals have their way. SFU political science professor Patrick Smith wouldn’t be surprised if the party acts to try and bring down the government at its first opportunity. He says it would lead to uncertainty and that few Canadians want it. Smith, who will have any eye on political activity over the coming weeks, is currently on sabbatical and best contacted via email.
