Averting an election – for now

Support from the separatist Bloc Québécois for the minority Tory government in a key confidence vote on Friday may avert a fall election for now. But the federal Conservatives could still be toppled in a second vote in the weeks ahead. Several SFU faculty experts can provide comment as the politics unfold, among them:
- Political scientist Cara Camcastle is teaching a Canadian politics course this fall and following developments in Ottawa closely (she is also doing research related to environmental politics).
- Business professor and political analyst Lindsay Meredith (778.782.5554; lindsay_meredith@sfu.ca) is available to look at issues related to political marketing and economics.
- Business colleague Andrey Pavlov can assess what a potential change in government might mean to the economy.
- Peter Hall, of SFU’s Centre for Sustainability, and Doug McArthur, a professor in SFU’s Public Policy program, can also look at the economic and policy issues at play.
- Kathleen Cross, a lecturer in the School of Communication, can provide comment on political marketing and communications.
- Business professor emeritus Gary Mauser can also weigh in on the politics at play. He says Canadians are becoming increasingly aware of “the downside” of minority governments. He predicts: “If an election is called, both the government and the opposition will go all out to win a majority. It does not matter what Ignatieff says; if he managed to win more seats than the Conservatives, he'd form a coalition with either the NDP or the Bloc in order to avoid another minority government.”
