Lungpacer wins third spot
A new therapeutic device that can improve the recovery time of critically ill patients on mechanical ventilators took third place in the annual New Ventures B.C. competition this week. The minimally invasive Lungpacer system, created by SFU biomedical physiologist Andy Hoffer, enables faster patient recovery, shorter stays in intensive care and greater patient access to scarce mechanical ventilators. Lungpacer was one of 10 finalists chosen from more than 175 companies. Hoffer can talk about the need for such a device and how it can save bundles in health care costs. See: http://at.sfu.ca/bhIxpK

Campus celebrates Terry Fox
SFU is marking its own celebration of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope with a run/walk around the Burnaby campus on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 12 noon. Prior to the event (11:40 a.m.) in Convocation Mall, the university will award the Terry Fox medal to SFU Surrey student Chris Arena, who continues to raise money for sick kids while battling his own rare and incurable blood disease. The third-year biology student suffers from Castleman’s disease and has survived numerous near-fatal infections. He is involved in SFU’s Balding for Dollars campaign, which has raised nearly $40,000 for kids with cancer and blood disorders.
