A team of students and professors from SFU and two Ontario universities finished in fourth place at the U.S. Department of Energy's prestigious Solar Decathlon in Washington, DC. According to SFU team advisor Rob Woodbury, the fourth-place finish was impressive because, unlike the finalists, it was the first time the Canadians had entered the competition.

The three members of Team North -- SFU, Waterloo and Ryerson -- built North House, a solar-powered house designed especially for Canada's cold weather. The SFU contingent is from the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) and was responsible for the house's control panels and user interface. They hope to bring North House back to Vancouver to showcase it at the 2010 Winter Olympics. SIAT faculty members Lyn Bartram and Rob Woodbury went with the team to Washington and can comment on the competition and the house's innovative features, which they say can be widely adapted in Canadian homes.
