Media and H1N1
For weeks the problems plaguing Canada’s rollout of the HIN1 pandemic preparedness plan have been topping the news. Peter Chow-White, an assistant professor of communication at SFU, studies how new scientific technologies, conventional media and new media intersect to impact the public consumption of information. Chow-White believes that fervent media coverage of the H1N1 vaccine program “has seeped into our daily lives to the point where the public has trouble distinguishing between what warrants justifiable panic and concern about protection.”

Trading places – from boardrooms to reserves
Canada’s first leadership program to place senior executive officers at meetings on aboriginal reserves and get First Nations chiefs into executive suites kicks off Nov. 5 in Vancouver at SFU’s Segal Graduate School of Business. The Leadership Exchange program, created by SFU’s Learning Strategies Group (LSG) in partnership with the Industry Council for Aboriginal Business (IACB), is the first to pair aboriginal and non-aboriginal business leaders so that they can experience each other’s work and cultural environments. Rick Colbourne, executive director of LSG, says the program grew out of LSG’s experience with building leadership capacity in aboriginal communities. He can expand on the program’s goals.
