Sahara ultra-marathoner returns
SFU ombudsperson and ultra-marathoner Jay Solman is back from Egypt after completing the grueling six-day, 254-km (156 mile) Sahara Race, rated by Time Magazine as one of the world's harshest endurance competitions. Solman can talk about running the equivalent of a marathon each day in 30C to 50C temperatures. He says the final 3km to the finish line, after a tortuous 16-hour, 85-km slog, were “some of the toughest physical and emotional moments of my life.”

Academics fight asbestos export
A grassroots effort to persuade the Canadian government to ban the country’s export of asbestos to developing nations is picking up steam. Responding to a letter authored by SFU health scientist Tim Takaro, the federal Liberal party has done an about-face on its decades-long support of the Canadian asbestos industry’s exports to the developing world. Takaro can talk about how he and fellow academics nationally have worked with Rightoncanada.ca to secure Liberal Party leader Michael Ignatieff’s opposition to the mining, use and export of asbestos. Rightoncanada is the human rights advocacy arm of the Rideau Institute on International Affairs in Ottawa.
