Video gaming going bye-bye?
The video game industry is struggling as evidenced by Nintendo’s reported 50 per cent decrease in revenues this past quarter and Electronic Arts’ massive layoffs during the last few years. Anthony Gurr, an SFU master’s student in education technology, blogs about how competition from Apple’s iTunes is helping to spell the demise of conventional video games. See http://www.arkanoid64.wordpress.com/. Gurr, whose first academic paper will be published in a textbook next month, is ready to share his thoughts and research.

Are we health conscious or hypochondriacs?
Susan Baxter wonders if the constant onslaught of medical and health information on the Internet is turning us all into hypochondriacs. Baxter graduated from an SFU interdisciplinary doctoral program in 2006. The Vancouver-based medical writer co-authored The Estrogen Errors: Why Progesterone is Better for Women’s Health. She will give a talk on the potential health risks of society’s obsessive fascination with modern medicine at a meeting of the Canadian Academic Independent Scholars on Thursday, Nov. 19. The talk, beginning at 7:30 p.m., will take place in the Diamond Alumni Lounge at SFU’s downtown campus in Harbour Centre. See http://www.independentscholars.net/
