Terry’s dream, 30 years later
Today (April 12) marks the 30th anniversary of the start of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. “It’s truly remarkable how his dream has lived on,” says Lorne Davies, SFU’s former athletics director, who knew Terry as a young athlete and watched as he drew up his plan, shortly after losing his leg to cancer, to raise money for cancer research. Davies retired from SFU in 1995 but since then has remained on campus as director of the national Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Foundation, which provides scholarships of $7,000 a year for four years to 20 students (from more than 700 – 800 applications) annually. Davies can share anecdotes about Terry’s determination and how the young hero impacted the more than 800 students (seven of whom have become Rhode scholars) to receive scholarships to date.

Going hungry for the homeless
Clint Burnham
, an associate professor of English at SFU, may look a little haggard when he addresses his classes this week. The passionate community activist is on a liquid diet of tea, coffee, juice and some broth in a bid to fulfill his role as the 68th person to fast for a week in a grassroots campaign. The participants are trying to draw the public’s and the government’s attention to the need for a national housing strategy to ease, if not eliminate, homelessness. Burnham is available to talk about the campaign and his curbed appetite.
