Merit-based pay for teachers?
Rewarding teachers according to their teaching skills would be a tough act to implement, says SFU education expert Dan Laitsch, in response to a B.C. Liberal leadership candidate’s announcement. Kevin Falcon says he plans to push for merit-based pay for teachers if he becomes premier next month. “It’s a challenging policy to implement because there is great disagreement on how to define merit and accurately measure outcomes,” explains Laitsch.

Dangerous snow
Lots of snow and changing weather can make for an unpredictable avalanche season. “B.C.’s avalanche hazard rating was certainly a bit of a yoyo in the coastal mountains through parts of December,” says SFU avalanche safety researcher Pascal Haegeli, just back from a stint in Whistler. He’ll be watching avalanche conditions throughout the remaining winter season and can also talk about his avalanche safety research. He advises outdoor enthusiasts to plan trips into avalanche terrain according to current conditions by checking www.avalanche.ca/cac/bulletins/latest before venturing out.
