SFU criminologist Neil Boyd is among 550 researchers and health professionals from coast to coast who are publicly condemning Bill S-10. The proposed federal legislation would impose mandatory one-to two-year jail sentences for drug crimes. Boyd and other critics of the bill say it will have little effect in deterring serious drug traffickers and will disproportionately hit low-level dealers and injection users. “This will put people with mental health problems in jail,” says Boyd. “If you’re going to put people in jail you should only do so if they represent a threat to people or are seriously predatory.”
