The quest for healthy oceans
Without healthy thriving oceans all life forms would collapse. It’s a message that the United Nations and more than 900 community organizations globally try to drive home on World Oceans Day June 8. The United Nations first decreed the date last year, calling it an opportunity to raise global awareness of the plight of oceans in the face of climate change and exploitation of its resources. For the past decade Leah Bendell, an SFU ecotoxicologist, has been studying the impact of shell fishing on marine and wildlife in Baynes Sound, a channel between Denman Island and Vancouver Island. She can discuss her efforts to have this area—an essential habitat for globally important bird populations of Grebe, Scoter and Pacific Loon—declared a marine protected area.

Should B.C. become a major exporter of electricity?
British Columbia is undergoing major developments in its energy sector, particularly in electricity generation, transmission and delivery infrastructure. As B.C. stands on the brink of this clean energy revolution, the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) is hosting a forum to debate the province’s future electricity regime. FutureGrid: B.C.’s Energy Options in a Changing Environment will be held on June 15 and 16 at SFU's Wosk Centre for Dialogue in downtown Vancouver.

Mark Jaccard, an SFU energy policy expert and a former head of the B.C. Utilities Commission, will talk about B.C.'s new Clean Energy Act. He says, with major projects pending such as the Site C dam on the Peace River, extensions of the transmission grid and the mass replacement of meters in peoples' homes, now is the time for informed discussion on future regulatory checks and balances, the environmental and social impact of future power projects and market trends. PICS will also host a free public forum June 15, 7:30 to 9 p.m. on whether B.C. is as a clean energy-exporting powerhouse at the Sheraton Wall Centre in downtown Vancouver.
