Politics, Cyber hackers

Now that B.C. Liberal leader and Premier Gordon Campbell and B.C. NDP Opposition leader Carole James have bid farewell, attention is fully focused on who will be next. SFU public policy analyst Doug McArthur is following the leadership races closely. He says: “It is a three-way race for member votes with George Abbott and Christy Clarke likely in the lead for actual Liberal member votes. The second preferences will likely have to be counted at which point Clarke will likely have the most votes but Abbott may win.” McArthur can explain his thinking.

Canada as gateway for cyber hacking
Paul Meyer says, “There is no limit on what might prove useful to a dedicated cyber attacker,” in response to news about foreign, possibly China-based, cyber hacking of Canadian government departments. Just appointed adjunct professor in SFU’s School for International Studies and a fellow in international security at the Centre for Dialogue, Meyer is a career diplomat who researches international security issues, including cyber security. "I think if would be terribly naive of Canadians to think that information held or generated by their government would not be of interest to foreign intelligence or criminal groups. It is important to bear in mind that the Canadian government also is the recipient of privileged information provided by other states through shared alliances and some may perceive Canada as a relatively "soft" target for cyber attack compared with some of our allies which have invested more in cyber defence."
