Clark: the candidate to beat
“Good bloody luck,” is what Lindsay Meredith has said to media inquiring about who is the frontrunner in what is shaping up to be a five horse race for the B.C. Liberal party leadership.  The SFU political marketing expert and other experts at the university may be revising their views on the race, due to the results of a new poll. Forty per cent of respondents said Christy Clark is the star to beat. SFU experts can also comment on B.C. Health Minister Kevin Falcon’s entrance into the race this morning.

Gaining social media’s leg up
SFU assistant professor of communication Peter Chow-White is playing close attention to how savvy or reckless social media use could enhance or hinder the B.C. Liberal leadership candidates. Chow-White notes two contrasting situations in previous elections as examples. “The NDP candidate for the new False Creek riding in the last B.C. election had to step down after someone leaked pictures of him partying, from his Facebook site. On the other hand, the strategic use of social media helped catapult United States President Barak Obama into the oval office.”

All affected even if not infected
A number of HIV/AIDS awareness groups, advocates, health professionals and researchers are coming together at SFU to share information about the epidemic and recognize World AIDS Day tomorrow. Formed by the AIDS Awareness Network (AAN) — SFU health sciences students promoting universal responsibility for the fight against HIV/AIDS — this third annual event features keynote speakers, workshops and entertainment. SFU Health Sciences Dean John O’Neil, SFU Master’s of Public Health student Ashlee Shaw and B.C. Persons With AIDS Society coordinator Paul Kerston are among the speakers.

Environmental school gets green light
The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Board of Education has given the green light to the creation of a publicly funded K-to-7 environmental school, the first of its kind in B.C. SFU education professors Sean Blenkinsop, Kieran Egan and Mark Fettes, pioneers in the development of a teaching philosophy based on culturally inclusive imaginative development and emotional engagement, are behind the school. They can explain how the new school, slated to launch in February 2011, will tie delivery of B.C.’s public school curriculum to nurturing environmental awareness, engagement with the natural world and community sustainability.

Seasoned artists premiere student works
On Friday, Dec. 10, some of Vancouver’s finest musicians will premiere new chamber music and art songs composed by four senior students in the music program at the SFU School for the Contemporary Arts. The cross/sections graduation concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Djavad Mowafaghian theatre in the SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. It will feature violinist Mark Ferris, cellist Peggy Lee, bass-baritone Paul Nash and other internationally known musicians in three ensembles, playing works created by James O’Callaghan, Ted Hamilton, Vincent Lo and Drew Redman.  Major orchestras at home and afar have played O’Callaghan’s work. The emerging composer graduates in December and can explain what is in store for people attending this free evening of contemporary classical music. http://www.sfu.ca/~jdo1/crosssections.html
