Prof had ‘harrowing experience’
Nicole Jackson, an associate prof in SFU International Studies, is back safe in Vancouver after spending the past few weeks as a tourist in Egypt, where a “trip of a lifetime” with her partner and family changed to a harrowing experience when protests escalated. The couple had decided to take an extended tour of the Nile, which, for a time, left them docked and unable to get off the boat as their guide deemed it too dangerous to continue the tour. “We heard horrific stories of people trying to get out of Cairo or trying to find hotels, steep prices, panicked people and then were cut off from communication and news, not knowing when or how we could leave,” says Jackson.
Visiting Egypt along with alumni from three other Canadian universities, Jackson and her partner eventually made it out on a jet chartered by the University of Toronto and got home last night. Jackson, whose area of expertise includes Russia and Central Asia, is available to talk about the ordeal – and is still concerned for her parents, who are still stuck in Aswan.
