Online shopping boosts business
Only a few years ago, retail analysts were wondering if online shopping would ever take off because of concerns about criminals hacking into buyers’ bank accounts via personal banking numbers. But the latest Statistics Canada survey credits a massive spike in online shopping for a whopping $1.2 billion increase on goods and services ordered on the Internet last year, compared to 2007. SFU business expert Dianne Cyr researches online buying habits and can talk about the turnaround in online shopping confidence.

Math+science=Aboriginal success
Leaders in Canadian Aboriginal Peoples’ education, many of them Aboriginal themselves, will come together at a free public forum Wed., Sept. 29 at SFU’s Interdisciplinary Research in Mathematical and Computational Sciences (IRMACS) Centre in Burnaby. The Office for Aboriginal Peoples (OAP) at SFU and IRMACS are hosting the event, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., to raise educators’ awareness about the lack of math and science education among Aboriginal Peoples. Five speakers, including OAP director William Lindsay, will discuss the importance of math and science to Aboriginal Peoples’ ability to rise above “the Third World conditions of poverty many still find themselves in,” says Lindsay. There will be an open discussion and film after the presentations.

Gettin’ down and green
More than 30 sustainability-focused companies and organizations will be flashing their colours — shades of green — at SFU’s sustainability festival at the Burnaby campus on Wed., Sept. 29. A business expo, market, including the ever popular SFU Pocket Farmers market, and representatives from sustainability education will kick off the event at 10 a.m. SFU President Andrew Petter will introduce an eco-fashion show at 12:30 p.m. and the day’s festivities will include a variety of musical performances and garden workshops.
