While teens in Vancouver get ready to crash Rogers Arena to see teen pop star Justin Bieber’s performance tonight, SFU pop culture expert Paul Budra ponders the real source of his success. Many media and entertainment experts are citing social media as the real credit for Bieber’s success because YouTube videos of his first singing efforts went viral. But Budra says, “The formula is usually the same: clean cut, slightly androgynous young man makes sentimental pop songs that pre-teen girls swoon over. Bieber was lucky. His videos went viral. I imagine there’s 100,000 would-be Biebers who are languishing in the forgotten corners of YouTube right now.”
