Taxes no laughing matter
April Fool’s Day jokes may have the world laughing today, but increased taxes in B.C. are no joke to many of the province’s taxpayers. The NDP opposition is slamming the B.C. Liberal government for implementing today numerous tax increases, affecting everything from ferry and hydro rates to campsite fees. However, business administration associate professor Andrey Pavlov supports the government’s increases. “I very much support,” says Pavlov, “the government’s approach to keeping income taxes low and reducing or eliminating the subsidies it provides for many services.”

Ailing airline industry
The collapse of Skyservice, a charter airline that works with Sunquest and Signature vacations to fly vacationers out of Vancouver and Abbotsford, is another symptom of an ailing air industry say two SFU experts. Anthony Perl, an urban studies professor and co-author of Transport Revolutions predicts an end to mass tourism aviation in the next 20 years. Perl blames the increasing cost and decreasing availability of aviation oil. Urban geographer Warren Gill says the collapse of Skyservice should have little effect in B.C. but it does reduce competition.

Calling all robots
SFU’s Faculty of Applied Science Student Societies are hosting a world record attempt for the largest-ever group of people doing "The Robot” on Thursday, April 8 from noon to 2 p.m at Convocation Mall. To date nearly 600 students have replied to a Facebook invite and the organizers say the current record – 318 people set by the University of Melbourne – is “easily breakable.” Organizers are encouraging students to show up at noon with their own cardboard boxes, giving them an hour to get in costume (duct tape, silver face paint, etc) before a 1 p.m. start. The event is to celebrate the creation of a new Mechatronics (Robotics) student union. Directions: http://www.sfu.ca/about/maps.html
