The race is on
Who will lead the provincial New Democrats now that Carole James has bowed to internal pressure and resigned? SFU political pundits Gary Mauser, Kennedy Stewart and Marjorie Griffin Cohen are standing by to offer comment on recent developments.
Says Mauser: "Campbell's resignation gives the Liberals a fighting chance; I think any of the Liberal candidates could win with Carol James resignation. This is reminiscent of the NDP mutiny back in the Bob Skelly days. The NDP is a fractious bunch and in some senses that’s good because that's democracy--but in terms of functionality it's not good. Egos spring large in all political parties and I think Jenny [Kwan] and her cohorts think this is an opportunity, but they're undervaluing the fact that to win an election in B.C. you have to win the moderates."
Says Cohen: "This resignation was inevitable. The question now is who will lead and by what process will they be chosen? My hope is that they don't rush to name a leader without following proper process."
