International Women’s Day
On the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, Marjorie Cohen, an SFU political scientist and gender studies professor, and Catherine Murray, chair of gender, sexuality and women’s studies, are standing by to offer comment on how far women have come in terms of economic, political and social equality -- and what challenges are still to be overcome.

Oceans, clouds and global warming

How oceans and clouds affect climate change is the focus of two global warming seminars at SFU’s IRMACS Centre.

The first, on Wednesday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m., examines the impact of the world's oceans on climate, led by senior scientist Kevin Trenberth, head of the Climate Analysis Section of the National Centre for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, and an acclaimed climate change researcher. He’ll examine how melting land ice contributes to sea level rise, and the impact of the overall flow of energy through the climate system – its uptake by the oceans in summer and discharge in winter.

Then on Tuesday, March 15 at 12:30 p.m., David Randall, a professor at Colorado State University’s department of atmospheric science, will highlight the behavior of clouds and the physics of climate change. Randall has held positions at MIT and with NASA and his current research involves modeling studies of clouds and their role in the global climate system.

Health care costs and delivery under scrutiny
The costs and delivery of health care will be examined during a graduate student-led conference at SFU’s Vancouver campus at Harbour Centre March 12. Affirming Equity: Strengthening Public Health Care Financing and Delivery will bring health care professionals and providers, researchers and students together to discuss ways to strengthen how health care is delivered and financed in B.C. and across Canada. Media are welcome to attend. SFU faculty organizer Karen Palmer, a lecturer in health sciences and a health policy analyst, can provide pre-and post-conference thoughts.
