Lining up for education

SFU education policy expert Dan Laitsch has come across an American study that may shed light on a Vancouver phenomenon. On the weekend parents camped overnight outside Elsie Roy Elementary School in Vancouver’s posh Yaletown to secure their kids a seat. Students unable to get in are being bussed to an elementary school in Strathcona, a poorer neighbourhood where there are 200 vacant seats. Laitsch can talk about how the American report WHO CHOOSES SCHOOLS, AND WHY? may explain what is going on here. The report is available at http://epsl.asu.edu/epru/documents/EPSL-0801-247-EPRU.pdf

Time to woo women voters
Political pundits are warning federal Conservative leader and Prime Minister Stephen Harper that it’s time for him to start wooing women voters if his government hopes to form a majority. The warning comes on the heels of new national polls indicating that only 28 percent of women would vote for the Conservatives, compared to 43 percent of men, if a vote were held today. SFU political analyst Lynda Erickson, co-author of a 2002 study about women’s changing voting practices, can explain how what woos women voters has changed in the last two decades.

Democratic rivals brace for New Hampshire
The next chapter in the U.S. presidential race unfolds tomorrow (Jan. 8) in New Hampshire, as democrats Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and former senator John Edwards fight a tight three-way battle and continue to trade shots in advance of the primary. SFU historian Michael Fellman, an expert on American history and politics, is following the story and can assess the vote results. He has been writing about the U.S. election race for The Tyee (www.thetyee.ca).
