Spring confirmation for qualified students

Learning on spring break

Here’s a twist in the classroom that is easy on parents’ pocket books and educational for teachers-in-training during the spring break this week. Under the supervision of certified teachers in the Coquitlam School District, SFU student teachers are providing free daycare from March 17 to 20 at Seaview Elementary School. During the program, called The Spring Break School of Wonderstanding, SFU student teachers are keeping children in kindergarten to Grade 5 busy with hands-on activities such as cooking, board games, dance/sports, science experiments and drama. Marlene Nelson, an SFU faculty associate involved in teacher training at SFU, says the program provides parents with an inexpensive way of keeping kids entertained during spring break. It also enables student teachers to get training with a wider range of students than those in their practicum, and give back to the community.

Spring confirmation for qualified students
SFU has dramatically reduced the time it takes to confirm early admission to high school students applying for the fall 2008 semester. Qualified high school students, applying for scholarships and with 90-per-cent or better grade-point averages (GPAs), started receiving confirmed admission offers as early as March 15. “For top students with interim high school transcripts to qualify for scholarships by the deadline, we will now offer not just a conditional offer, as before, but a confirmed, competitive offer as of March 15,” says Mehran Kiai, enrollment services director. Kiai can elaborate on the reasoning behind the earlier confirmations and why they still stand even if confirmed students’ final averages fall below their chosen faculty’s GPA requirement.
