Adventures in carbon trading
SFU Business student Tom Kineshanko is carving his niche in the coming carbon market. He has spent his last semester planning the transition of his grandfather’s company, Habitat Enterprises, into a firm that specializes in carbon-trading, consulting, and project development. The company develops and manages projects that create international-quality carbon-offset credits that can then be sold to companies wanting to be carbon-neutral. An honors student in SFU’s Semester in Sustainability program, he discovered the opportunities in carbon-trading while on an international exchange semester last year. “I see a real need to push environmental innovation,” says Kineshanko. “I want to help Canada catch up. I think we have a real opportunity – and a real risk if we don’t.”

A virtual wealth of green
Boyd Cohen, an assistant professor at SFU Business, is the creator of a new sustainability venture called 3rdwhale (www.3rdwhale.com), featuring a host of green ‘channels’ or content areas (which will soon contain Web 2.0 features), highlighting everything from green jobs and venturing, to green travel – even green dating. Cohen is also the developer of See-It Software, used by organizers of last year’s Live Earth concerts to monitor global emissions during the event.
