Obesity linked to our environments
Consistent evidence shows the prevalence of overweight people is increasing rapidly around the world — at a speed that suggests everyday environments and behaviours, rather than changing genetic profiles, may underlie the problem. A recent study in the American Journal of Public Health found that urban environments in Canada play a small but significant role. SFU kinesiologist Diane Finegood, who is overseeing a national study on obesity, can elaborate on the factors that impact obesity.

Fuel costs take a new leap
Gas prices in the Lower Mainland and elsewhere are on the rise, but the blistering $1.27/litre won’t stop there, warns SFU marketing analyst Lindsay Meredith. “Either you get a total consumer backlash or government intervention, or when enough time goes by consumers will go to alternative energy – then we’ll have a crash in the oil business like the last time they did this in the ‘70s and along came the Volkswagen Beetle.”

New anti-torture deal
The federal government has signed a new deal with the government of Afghanistan to ensure Canada has greater access to prisoners handed over to Afghan authorities. The deal has resulted in the suspension of a federal court hearing into the handling of detainees in Afghanistan. Doug McArthur, an SFU public policy analyst helping Afghanistan decentralize its government, says it “remains to be seen whether this new deal can work.” McArthur can comment on Canada's obligations under the Geneva Convention and other international laws to ensure prisoners taken in military action are not tortured.
