Mars landing reveals similar landscape
The U.S. space probe Phoenix has landed in the northern polar region of Mars. Early photos show a striking resemblance to the ground patterns on Devon Island in the north Arctic, says SFU researcher Stephen Braham, who is a leading member of a research team working on the NASA Houghton-Mars Project on Devon Island. The researchers are studying conditions at a Mars-like crater in the high Arctic region. The Phoenix mission’s principle investigator Peter Smith has worked with Braham and the team at HMP. Braham, a member of the Canadian Space Agency’s Space Exploration Advisory Committee, advises the CSA on science-driven exploration missions and was the lead Canadian member of a competing team when Phoenix was selected for the mission. Braham can talk about Mars exploration as well as the ongoing Arctic project.
