Help for future wildfires – in Greece
B.C. is sharing its expertise in fighting wildfires with Greece, a country ravaged by fires in the summer of 2007, by providing training and equipment to its fire brigade. It’s a unique relationship that has been developed in part with the assistance of SFU’s Hellenic Studies program, which helped organize an earlier workshop for local authorities in Athens and is developing online training for firefighters. A group from Greece’s Hellenic Brigade is set to come to Vancouver for further training this fall. Andre Gerolymatos, Hellenic Studies program director, can talk about SFU’s involvement in helping Greece combat forest fires.

Shuffling the deck
Premier Gordon Campbell is set to shuffle players in his cabinet this afternoon (June 23). SFU political science professor Patrick Smith can assess the moves and comment on what the changes could mean for the various portfolios.

Honoring top alumni
Every year SFU honours its most accomplished graduates with Outstanding Alumni Awards – more than 100 have been recognized since the awards were first established 25 years ago. Nominations for the 2008 Outstanding Alumni Awards are being sought from alumni, faculty, staff, students and SFU's many friends in the community. Nomination packages can be obtained at www.sfu.ca/alumni or from the Alumni Relations office at 778.782.4723. Deadline for submission is June 30.
