Sunshine Coast archaeology dig enters final week
On the Sliammon reserve, archaeologists from Simon Fraser University are working together with Sliammon community members to uncover bits of the past and verify the oral histories that still exist about the look-out, or “fighting house” and a series of underground houses that were used when warring Haida were approaching. But the project is as much about new directions in preserving First Nations culture and history - how partnerships between First Nations and scientists and even governments are helping to advance and improve preservation processes. SFU archaeologist Dana Lepofsky is working with the Sliammon and has also worked with the Sto:lo in the Fraser Valley. She (along with various players on the Sliammon dig) can share the experiences from this summer’s work and talk about where the long-term project goes next.

Igali in town briefly
Olympic gold medalist (2000) Daniel Igali will be taking a pair of Nigerian wrestlers to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing in a few weeks – he happens to be in Vancouver this weekend before leaving Monday for two weeks of training with them in Korea. The SFU graduate student in criminology (who has spent much of the past two years attending to the school he established in his village of Eniwari) plans to keep an Olympic Diary as he did during the previous two Olympic games, when he competed for Canada. Keep tabs at http://www.igali.com/.

Chinese profs visit next week for program review
A delegation of professors from Zhejiang University in China will be at SFU’s Burnaby campus on Monday and Tuesday (July 21 and 22) to take part in a review (with SFU counterparts) of a unique dual degree program in computing science, that will see 10 SFU students and 36 from ZU receive degrees from both universities when they complete the program in two years, preparing them for the global market. The students (most began at 18) have just spent two years in China – the SFU students and nine of the Chinese students are back here now, the remainder will come over the summer in time for fall studies at SFU. Professors want to review how the program is working and make plans for the future (ie, given high interest from China, how far might they expand?) Interviews can be arranged with professors as well as students.
