They’ll cheer, rally together and beat their drums – 500 at a time. Nearly 2,000 high school grads will break the ice with peers during SFU’s student Orientation festivities. On Wednesday, Aug. 29 (9:30 – 10:30 a.m.) students will participate in the mother of all ice-breakers – a high-energy rally featuring spontaneous activities led by 120 Highland-themed leaders in Convocation Mall. Keep those ear-plugs. On Thursday, Aug. 30 (9:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.) students will drum together in a mass drum-in. The team-building event will feature students on 500 drums supplied by the motivational company Drum Café.

New breed of engineers
The first students to enroll in a brand new engineering program at SFU – known as mechatronics - begin their studies this fall at SFU’s Surrey campus. The program, one of the first of its kind in North America - has a unique engineering philosophy focusing on a simpler and more efficient way of designing and building products such as digital cameras or anti-lock brakes. Program director Farid Golnaraghi says students (60 male and two female) will eventually conceive, design and develop products with industry.

CSI-SFU
Attraction to forensic studies has always been popular at SFU – long before the TV show CSI raised the intrigue level. Criminologist Gail Anderson teaches, runs a lab and continues to carry out research, her latest using pig carcasses in undersea drops (her next will be in mid-September) and car fires to monitor insect activity. Anderson can talk about the general fascination with the field that is keeping courses full.
