Debates go north, south of the border
Tonight voters on both sides of the border will tune in to watch key political leaders weigh issues and attempt to raise profiles. Canada’s political party leaders will face off in English, while in the U.S. the debate will be a show-down between vice-presidential hopefuls Sarah Pallin and Joe Bidden. For an updated list of SFU experts on the elections – from Richard Harris, an expert on the Canadian economy, to U.S. election analyist Jean-Francois Gotbout – see our Election experts list.

You can lead a horse to transit
But can you make him ride? That's the question TransLink is asking as it prepares to launch a special "Way to 2010" Olympic travel section on its website on Friday, Oct. 3. With no public parking available at games venues, the pressure's on to change the way people move around the city during the Olympics -- and after. Will it work? And can it last? SFU geographer and transportation expert Warren Gill can comment on the likelihood of a post-Olympic transportation revolution.

Drug policy smoke signals
The Beckley Foundation's Global Cannabis Commission Report will be rolled out at the House of Lords in London, England on Thursday, Oct. 2, during a day-long seminar--Where can we go with cannabis policy?--that is expected to attract more than 100 international law- and policy-makers, public health officials, and addiction researchers to Westminster Palace. SFU Health Sciences researcher Benedikt Fischer is one of the report's five authors, and the only Canadian. Fischer's travel and speaking schedule is impossibly tight, but he is available for interviews after his return to Canada on Oct. 6. For more info: www.beckleyfoundation.org/seminar/seminar2008.html
