Does ethnic media help or hinder new Canadians? With one in five Canadians foreign-born, ethnic media outlets are growing in number and reach across the country. But do these culturally specific media facilitate integration or hinder it? SFU Communication professor Catherine Murray tracked 144 Vancouver-based news media outlets in 22 languages for her just-released study, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Media in BC. Her research recommends stronger connections between ethnic news services are necessary to improve inter-cultural understanding and citizenship.
