Mark Jaccard, one of four Simon Fraser University alumni receiving SFU’s annual Outstanding Alumni Award (OAA) in February, is a little closer to achieving what he would do if he could change the world.
Jaccard, an SFU professor in the School of Resources and Environmental Management (REM) since 1986, is a member of Canada’s National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy. The independent advisory panel, commissioned by the federal government to study ways Canada can seriously cut greenhouse gas emissions, has just recommended that greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere no longer be free.
Asked what he would do if he could change the world Jaccard recently said: “If I could do one thing, I would succeed in convincing the Canadian government to implement immediately a carbon tax that would be modest at first. It would protect our industry from unfair international competition and consumers from abrupt fuel price increases. But it would gradually rise over the coming decades as other countries joined us for a global greenhouse gas reduction effort.”
Jaccard will elaborate on his wish and what Canadians can do about climate change in his OAA address at a public dinner to honour OAA recipients on Tuesday, February 19 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver. Tickets to the event sponsored by the SFU Alumni Association are $95 per person and $700 per table. For more information and to reserve tickets contact alumni@sfu.ca or 778.782.4723.
An international guru on energy economics, Jaccard (BA ’78, MRM ’84) is a researcher, consultant, author, media commentator, teacher and mentor. He has spent the last two decades advancing knowledge on key energy issues such as transportation, greenhouse gases and consumption of renewable and non-renewable energy sources. The New Westminster resident serves on a council of energy advisors for China, a role that could help significantly to reduce global gas emissions. Jaccard is also a special advisor to the British Columbia government’s Climate Action Team and its Cabinet Committee on Climate Action.
The 2007 OAA dinner will also feature speeches by this year’s other recipients: Elaine Gallagher, David Granville and Alison Lawton. Their award, which recognizes SFU alumni’s outstanding contributions to society since graduating from SFU, acknowledges different types of achievement, including professional, academic and community service. Jaccard’s award was for academic achievement. The 2007 recipients have contributed greatly to the achievement of health, environmental and humanitarian goals globally.
They were all recently asked: “What would you do to change the world if you could?” See following backgrounder.
