SFU will honour David Gillanders, QC, who chairs the SFU Community Trust’s board of directors, with the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award at an awards dinner acknowledging faculty and staff Wednesday, Feb. 20. The event (reception at 6 pm, dinner at 6:45 pm) will be at the Four Seasons Hotel.

The award recognizes individuals outside the university community who have made a distinguished contribution to the province in areas in which SFU has a major interest or direct association.

Gillanders was instrumental in the creation of the Trust. He helped ensure that it meets its goal of creating a sustainable community at UniverCity while creating an endowment and other sources of revenue to support the university.

Gillanders is a partner and senior practitioner in the Vancouver office of the business law firm Stikeman Elliott. His practice includes residential, commercial and industrial real estate development, sales, financing, syndication and leasing, with particular expertise in residential, shopping centre, office and mixed-use developments. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the International Bar Association and the International Council of Shopping Centres and is a director and past president of Lambda Alpha International (Vancouver Chapter).

In addition to his work with the Trust, Gillanders donates his time and expertise as a director of the Vancouver Summer Music Festival, the Bill Reid Foundation and the Laurier Institution. He is a former director and past president of the Vancouver Opera Association. Gillanders is also a former director and member of numerous boards including the Vancouver Club, Children’s Hospital, York House School and St. George’s School.
