B.C.’s Man in Motion, a former UBC president and a prominent First Nations artist are among 10 individuals to be recognized with honorary degrees during Simon Fraser University’s Spring and Fall Convocation ceremonies in 2008.
Rick Hansen and Coast Salish artist Susan Point are among six distinguished individuals to receive honorary degrees during Spring Convocation June 3 – 6. Former UBC President Martha Piper will be one of four to take the stage during Fall Convocation Oct. 9 - 10.
Spring Convocation honorary degree recipients include:
Nelly Auersperg, UBC professor and Terry Fox Research Scientist with the National Cancer Institute of Canada, who has made major contributions to women’s health research concerning the causes and progression of cancers of the female reproductive organs,
Rick Hansen, President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, who has spent the two decades since his Man in Motion world tour involved in raising awareness and funds for spinal cord research,
William Gibson, noted science fiction writer whose 1984 award-winning novel Neuromancer helped introduce the concept of cyberspace to the world,
Michael Kirby, Chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, formed in 2007. Kirby has brought health and mental health issues to the forefront through his work as Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology,
Susan Point, internationally renowned artist, whose work has played a prominent role in the renewal of the Coast Salish First Nation’s cultural heritage,
Mossadiq Umedaly, Chairman, and CEO of Xantrex Technology, a world leader in advanced power electronics, and formerly Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Ballard Power Systems, the world’s leading fuel cell company.
Fall Convocation honorary degree recipients:
Iain Baxter&, (note the ampersand is part of his name) professor emeritus in the School of Visual Arts at the University of Windsor and an internationally known contemporary artist whose work has helped reshape and redefine the Canadian modern art scene,
Cary Fowler, Executive Director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, creator of the first global seed bank. A graduate of SFU (1971), his career in the conservation and use of crop diversity spans three decades,
Deepa Mehta, an internationally acclaimed and award-winning director from India, who immigrated to Canada and, self-taught in film production, formed a highly successful documentary production company.
Martha Piper, UBC’s first woman President, and an advocate for the importance of universities’ research contributions to economic and social development. Her advocacy played a key role in the creation of the Canada Research Chairs program.
