Applications to first-year Simon Fraser University degree programs at all three of its campuses are up three per cent over the same period last year.

That is an increase of more than 400 applications, more than half of them from prospective students outside of B.C. and Canada.

Kate Ross, SFU Registrar, says: “Our international partnerships and collaboration with colleges and universities in Asia and other areas are increasing first-year international student applications. Also, our ability to confirm admission acceptance earlier is encouraging prospective students to apply.”

Changes to SFU’s admission process in January 2008 enabled the university to dramatically reduce the time it takes to confirm early admission to high school graduates applying for the coming fall semester.

Based on official transcripts, qualified high-school students (90-per-cent or better average) eligible for scholarships will be receiving confirmed admission offers as early as April 17.

In general, prospective students who self-report marks that meet high school graduation averages required by the faculty to which they are applying can expect their application to be confirmed in early May.

Ross is pleased about the increase in first-year applications, as historically, many do translate into confirmed enrollment.

Given recent cutbacks in government funding for post secondary education, she urges prospective students to get their applications in as soon as possible. “We only have so many seats and April 30 is the key deadline for getting applications into us,” says Ross.

SFU has 4,885 seats for new first year students this fall.
