Earth Day events highlight salmon, trees
About 250 people showed up at Univercity Town Square next to the Cornerstone building to insert some 500 plant plugs into a seven-metre salmon "eco-sculpture" in exchange for a donation to the B.C. Rivershed Society's Brunette Rivershed demonstration project.
Organizers say the "plant a plug and save a salmon" event, which was co-sponsored by SFU and the City of Burnaby, raised about $350.
Meanwhile, about a dozen people planted 30-50 native tree seedlings and hundreds other native plants in "the grove," near the Applied Sciences building east entrance, replacing those blown down during a windstorm last December.
All of the young plants were grown from seeds collected on Burnaby Mountain and propagated by a local grower dedicated to stewarding native habitats.
