Backgrounder TASC2: Opening day tours of research facilities
April 27, 2007
4D Labs: West Wing
Host: Ross Hill, 604.291.4872; ross_hill@sfu.ca
Research focuses on the preparation and characterization of new thin film materials. In particular, the lab’s most recent efforts have been focused on the use of a photochemical metalorganic deposition method to create new materials with advanced functionalities.
Glycoscience lab: West Wing penthouse
Host: David Vocadlo, 604.291.3530; david_vocadlo@sfu.ca
Glycobiology is the study of how carbohydrates affect critical processes in biological systems. As a Canada Research Chair in chemical glycobiology, Vocadlo is investigating how certain sugars can disrupt the proper functioning of cells, contributing to the onset of diabetes and neurodegeneration.
Energy and Materials Research Group: East Wing
Host: Mark Jaccard, 604.291.4519; mark_jaccard@sfu.ca
Meet SFU’s energy-economy modelers and learn how deep reductions in Canada's greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants can be achieved with economically efficient climate change policies.
Media analysis lab: TT7460 and TT7560
Host: David Murphy, communication, 604.291.3623; david_c_murphy@sfu.ca
The Media Analysis Lab provides a critical and creative environment for making, analyzing and researching the changing role of mediated social communication. Researchers hope to foster a synergy between critical thinking and creativity when applying them to democratic public communication in education, advocacy and community development.
Climate Resources and Global Change: rm 6120
Karen Kavanagh, physics, 4-D LABS, 604.291.4244; karen_kavanagh@sfu.ca
Poster presentation. In addition, the Nanoimaging Facility will demonstrate how large electron microscopes are used.
MITACS: Room 8500
Host: Arvind Gupta, mathematics, 604.291.3349; arvind_gupta@sfu.ca
A poster session will showcase MITACS research.
