SFU will host 125 young members of the Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadet Corps and Squadrons May 4-10 for the National Cadet Marksmanship Championship.
The cadets, all chosen as top marksmen in regional competitions, will stay in residence on campus during the week-long championship. Competitions will be held in the west gymnasium.
According to Captain Doug Salmon, who will be among cadet leaders attending the event, competitive marksmanship is considered an integral part of cadet training.
“Competition not only encourages excellence in rifle marksmanship, it is designed to teach self-discipline and instill confidence. It also focuses on firearm safety and is conducted for the most part using non-lethal air rifles that are not classified as firearms.”
Three teams from Ontario, Quebec and the North, and two teams from each of the other provinces will compete for national honours. B.C.’s team includes Nicole Morrison, of the 2483 Esquimalt Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, the reigning national champion.
It’s the first time SFU has played host to the event, which runs day-long on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and culminates with an award ceremony Friday night. On Wednesday competitors will break for some sight-seeing around Vancouver.
