Key researchers in mental health and addiction will discuss their findings during the Workplace Mental Health and Addiction: Research, knowledge and action conference, May 17-18, at the Marriott Pinnacle Hotel, Vancouver, B.C.
This Canadian Institute of Health Research-sponsored event is organized by Simon Fraser University's Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction (CARMHA). It is part of a $3.2 million federal health research initiative aimed at improving mental health in the workplace.
Conference sessions will focus on prevention and promotion, disability management and return-to-work, diagnosis and treatment, stigma and discrimination, and mental health and addiction policies, all within the workplace.
Keynote speaker Julian Barling, a Queen's University business professor, will discuss 10 key aspects of a psychologically healthy workplace. Dr. Barling is author of Employment, Stress and Family Functioning, which debunked the myth that maternal employment adversely affects children's behaviour. Instead, Barling showed it is the quality of both parents' employment that affects children.
Other sessions will look at employment for those with severe mental illness, managing psychological trauma in the workplace, addiction in the longshore industry, drug testing and the impact of alcohol. Poster sessions will report on many new research investigations such as the effect of SARS on nurses working in a Toronto hospital ("They don't even want you living on your own street," says one nurse), mood disorders, work stress and work-family conflict.
Media are welcome to attend but space is limited. Please contact 604.291.5263 or cihrconf@sfu.ca to ensure a seat or to arrange interviews.
Program materials are also available in French.
