Graduate students enrolling in Simon Fraser University’s new Faculty of Health Sciences will benefit from a $400,000 donation from TD Bank Financial Group.
The gift will be matched by SFU to create an $800,000 endowment that will increase educational opportunities for students, regardless of their financial situation.
Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Financial Group today announced the creation of the TD Graduate Bursary Endowment for the Faculty of Health Sciences.
“TD is a firm believer in the importance of education and the difference it can make, not only in the lives of the students but also in their communities,” said McKenna.
“SFU has a solid reputation and its Faculty of Health Sciences’ focus on population and public health will prepare students to lead initiatives against a growing number of public health epidemics. We’re proud to be able to lend our support to these future leaders.”
SFU’s Faculty of Health Sciences currently offers a multidisciplinary master of science degree in population and public health, with an optional concentration in global health. The program prepares established professionals and recent graduates for leadership positions in population and public health.
The global health option is designed to train agents of change who want to improve the health and well-being of those in low-to-middle-income countries.
Additional specialized public health programs at the master's and PhD level are under development for environmental and occupational health, mental health and addiction, social determinants of health, and infectious disease.
Says SFU Chancellor, Dr. Brandt Louie, “SFU depends on donors like TD Bank Financial Group to help us attract the best students and ensure that they get the best education possible. It is my honour to thank Frank McKenna and TD for this generous and important gift.”
