Interactive website design and video work at Simon Fraser University is reaping a bounty of awards.
SFU’s Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology’s website ‘A Journey into Time Immemorial’ (www.sfu.museum/time) has earned a prestigious Award of Excellence in the post-secondary/interactive category from the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education.
SFU’s Learning and Instructional Development Centre (LIDC) also won the CNIE’s Award of Excellence in the Post-Secondary/Visual Media Category for its 2008 promotional video for SFU Contemporary Arts. The same video earned an honorable mention at this year’s Prix D'Excellence by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.
The ‘Time Immemorial’ website is based on First Nations traditional knowledge and content developed in collaboration with the Sto:lo web site development committee and staff of the Xa:ytem Interpretive Center in Mission, B.C.
The LIDC’s Media Design unit provided the technical artistry.
The online exhibit was developed in partnership with the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), an initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
The SFU Museum-LIDC team also earned a pair of awards from U.S. based Horizon Interactive Awards. Their ‘Time Immemorial’ site earned gold while Hola Canada, a site about Canada’s Latin American cultural heritage, received silver in the College-University category.
“These are prestigious awards and reflect the high quality of innovation in developing cultural web sites that we have become known for,” says Barbara Winter, museum curator.
“We have been successful in international design competitions in the New Media realm for a number of years. It’s nice to see our video work getting recognition as well,” says Ivana Filipovic, Media Design manager.
The Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) is a new association formed by the amalgamation of the Canadian Association for Distance Education (CADE) and the Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada (AMTEC).
The Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), an initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage, was established in partnership with over 1,200 Canadian heritage institutions.
