Simon Fraser University film students will take center stage at the university’s Alumni Association annual general meeting on May 23, at the Vancouver International Film Centre and Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour St.)

Following the business portion of the meeting (at 7 p.m.), writer and director Scott Smith, an SFU alumnus, will talk about the independent film scene in Vancouver. Smith’s first feature film, Rollercoaster, debuted in 1999 and has since won several awards.

After Smith’s talk and reception (8:15 p.m.) five students will showcase their films in a special screening for alumni.

They include Rita Tse’s Eastbound, which was chosen as best film at the 35th Canadian Student Film Festival and netted the Norman McLaren award. Fourth-year student Tony Massil’s film Woodward’s (Three Acts) is described as a contemplative exploration of Vancouver’s historical landmark.

Other films include 23, by Andy Gavel and Alex Donyves, Win, Place or Show by Nathaniel Sullivan, and Good Night, Sleep Tight by film school graduate Laurynas Navidauskas.

This is a sold out event. Members of the media interested in attending should contact alumni relations at 778.782.4723 or check www.sfu.ca/alumni.
