B.C.’s Man in Motion Rick Hansen and Coast Salish artist Susan Point are among six distinguished individuals who will receive honorary degrees during Simon Fraser University’s Spring Convocation June 3 – 6.

More than 3,100 students are eligible to graduate this spring. Ceremonies begin with a colorful procession of graduands across the AQ and down the steps into Convocation Mall. They will be held as follows:

  • Tuesday, June 3 at 2:30 p.m.: the Faculty of Business Administration
  • Wednesday, June 4 at 9:45 a.m.: the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ Bachelor of General Studies degrees
  • Wednesday, June 4 at 2:30 p.m.: the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Thursday, June 5 at 9:45 a.m.: the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Friday, June 6 at 9:45 a.m.: the Faculty of Applied Sciences
  • Friday, June 6 at 2:30 p.m.: the Faculty of Applied Sciences (engineering science and kinesiology only), the Faculty of Education

Spring Convocation honorary degree recipients include:

Tuesday, 2:30 p.m.
Mossadiq Umedaly, Chairman of B.C. Hydro, also the chairman of Xantrex Technology Inc., a world leader in advanced power electronics, and formerly Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Ballard Power Systems, the world’s leading fuel cell company.

Wednesday, 9:45 a.m.
Nelly Auersperg, UBC professor and Terry Fox Research Scientist with the National Cancer Institute of Canada, who has made major contributions to women’s health research concerning the causes and progression of cancers of the female reproductive organs.

Wednesday, 2:30 p.m.
Susan Point, internationally renowned artist, whose work has played a prominent role in the renewal of the Coast Salish First Nation’s cultural heritage.

Thursday, 9:45 a.m.
Michael Kirby, Chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, formed in 2007. Kirby has brought health and mental health issues to the forefront through his work as Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology.

Thursday, 2:30 p.m.
William Gibson, noted science fiction writer whose 1984 award-winning novel Neuromancer helped introduce the concept of cyberspace to the world.

Friday, 2:30 p.m.
Rick Hansen, President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, who has spent the two decades since his Man in Motion world tour involved in raising awareness and funds for spinal cord research.
