Simon Fraser University is the recipient of the YWCA Vancouver’s innovative workplace of the year. The award pays tribute to the university’s supportive work culture and opportunities for education, training and development.
The award was accepted by Vice-President (legal affairs) Judith Osborne at the YWCA’s annual Women of Distinction awards banquet on May 26.
In accepting the award, Osborne noted that three of the university’s vice-presidents are women, the directors of the Surrey and Vancouver campuses are both female, 60 percent of students are women and that SFU was the first major Canadian university to have a female president, Pauline Jewett (1974-1978).
Other SFU faculty and staff were involved with the awards, both as judges (Brit Townsend, head coach of the SFU cross-country team) and as nominees – SFU Surrey campus executive director Joanne Curry was nominated in the community building category, kinesiology professor Diane Finegood was nominated in the health and active living category, and engineering science professor Ljiljana Trajkovic was nominated in the technology, science and industry category.
