Three women with ties to Simon Fraser University are recipients of the YWCA’s Women of Distinction awards.

Thelma Finlayson, a biology professor emeritus and founding member of SFU’s Centre for Pest Management, is being recognized in the category of Education, Training and Development. Now in her 90s, she continues to counsel students with academic difficulties – a role she has played for more than 36 years.

Hiromi Matsui, director of diversity and recruitment for SFU’s Faculty of Applied Sciences, is being honored in the Technology, Science and Industry category. Matsui has played a major role in promoting education and careers in science and technology for young women for the past four decades.

Saida Rasul, a member of SFU’s board of governors since 2002 and former board chair (2005 - 06), receives the honor in the Non-Profit and Public Service category.

The awards were presented May 29 at the annual YWCA of Vancouver Women of Distinction awards. They honour individuals whose outstanding activities and achievements contribute to the well-being and future of our community.
