Thanks to some polished footwork, Fiona Lee is a world champion.
The 17-year-old Coquitlam youth – daughter of SFU pipe band major Terry Lee – is the 2007 under-18 world highland dance champion after securing four straight firsts in Dunoon, Scotland on Aug. 25.
Lee was crowned champion in front of a packed grandstand of Highland Dance enthusiasts, including members of her family who accompanied her to Scotland for the event.
A first-year student at SFU this September (attending the campus orientation today), Lee began dancing at the age of five. Her instructor, Heather Jolley, has guided two other dancers, Jennifer Lyndsay and Estelle Clewes, to world champion success.
“We’ve had a lot of successes with the band, but when it’s your own child it’s a different experience – it was overwhelming,” says dad Terry. The elite band has won four world championship titles and placed second this summer.
Lee’s accomplishments this year alone include winning the B.C. championship as well as the British Open Highland Dancing Championship in Edinburgh earlier in August. She was first runner up in the Canadian contest in July. In 2005 she won the Scottish championship (under 16).
