Those vying for the chance to be the Greenest Person on the Planet will be green with envy when one of two remaining contestants wins the title on September 24.

After a few months and hundreds of entries, two top voter picks are Vancouverite Emily Jubenvill and Matthias Gelber, a German who lives in Malaysia.

The winner will be announced during a live media event at 3 p.m. during SFU’s sustainability festival taking place at the Burnaby campus (Convocation Mall) on September 24. Both candidates will be present – Jubenvill in person, Gelber by live video feed.

On Earth Day 2008, SFU Business Assistant Professor, Boyd Cohen, launched the 2008 Greenest Person on the Planet competition via his new company, 3rdwhale.com. The contest is an attempt to raise awareness of the need to accelerate individual action around the world in order to avert the worst-case scenarios facing our planet.

The online survey posted at 3rdwhale.com consisted of 20 questions about their lifestyles and their efforts to impact others. The level of interest was overwhelming with more than 600 applications from approximately 25 countries. Fast forward to today and the top two vote getters have been identified, each receiving more than 1,000 votes. The original goal was to receive at least 1,000 votes for the final round and, again exceeding expectations, 3rdwhale.com received more than 3,000 votes from people in more than 35 countries around the world. “We are excited to culminate this year’s competition at a live event at SFU, and we are expecting bigger and better things for next year’s competition to begin again on Earth Day 2009,” says Cohen.

The winner will receive a pod of beluga whales adopted on their behalf from the Defenders of Wildlife. Furthermore, the winner will have the chance to choose which non-profit organization will receive 5% of 3rdwhale’s 2009 profits, and $2 from the sale of each bamboo shirt available for sale on their website.
