SFU’s School of Criminology is the largest in Canada and one of the leading criminology and criminal justice teaching and research centres in the world.

A growing and diverse number of faculty members provide a strong research base and are taking the school in new and timely directions, making strides in everything from new methods of crime analysis and crime solving to understanding violent behaviour and addressing the issue of bullying.

The school has plans to supplement its programs with concentrations in areas such as restorative justice and international human rights. New legal studies minor and diploma programs began last year. The school is currently negotiating the establishment of a Centre for Cyber Crime.

The Surrey campus will soon offer a new police studies program and a master of arts degree for justice system managers.

The new facility houses a number of labs and centres, including the new Centre for Forensic Research, the ICURS lab, the Centre for Restorative Justice and the Centre for Research on Aggression and Violence, which is currently examining the development of aggression and violence through the course of life, particularly in the early years (led by criminologists Patrick Lussier and Raymond Corrado).

Says Robert Gordon, director of the school: “We’re delighted with our new lodgings. Our new research areas are outstanding and will enable faculty to expand their existing research program. We have grown significantly in recent years and continue to grow at both the Burnaby and Surrey campuses.”
