Simon Fraser University is one of the best employers in the country, according to Maclean’s Magazine. In its annual competition, the magazine ranked the university as one of Canada’s Top 100 employers – as well as a top employer in B.C.

According to Macleans: “Every year the competition gets bigger and tougher, as winners raise the bar on what Canadian workers can expect from their employers.

“These are the companies that understand what it takes to attract the best talent, and to boost the bottom line.”

Dario Nonis, executive director of Human Resources at SFU, says “it’s reassuring when external organizations provide confirmation of what many of us already believe – that SFU is a top employer.”

He adds: “It’s fair to say that the vast majority of employees here at SFU find it is a great place to work. There are many opportunities for employees to advance their skills and to learn and grow.

“The university provides a stimulating and challenging environment with many rewarding opportunities, both professional and personal.”

Criteria for the Maclean’s competition includes an in-depth examination of various aspects of the work environment, including the physical work place, wages, benefits and amenities available to the employees.

Factors include the makeup of the workforce, the physical environment, health and financial benefits and compensation, programs for older employees, training and development, environmental leadership and community involvement.

SFU was also cited for such offerings as its summer day-camp programs for employees’ and faculty members’ children and free fitness facilities.

The University of Toronto, along with the McGill Hospital and Teaching Centre, and the U of T’s academic health sciences centre were the only other university employers to make list.

The Top 100 employers are listed in the publication’s Oct. 9 issue.
