Pick your path and never stray: for generations, that’s the message parents and counselors have sent to secondary school students considering higher education. Now Simon Fraser University wants to send a different message: explore the side roads to find your best academic fit.

On Nov. 29, SFU’s Burnaby campus will host the second in a series of four unique events called SFU's World: A Campus Visit. They give high school students and their parents an opportunity to discover how SFU’s cross-disciplinary educational approach helps produce happy and highly marketable graduates.

From 10:30 to 2:30 pm, students will have the chance to explore all of SFU’s faculties and see the various combinations of programs available to suit their interests and talents.

Student recruitment and retention coordinator Stephen Price explains the concept: “Let’s take Joe, a student interested in the environment. Over the course of his academic career, Joe might want to indulge an interest in how money is applied to help the environment through the study of environmental economics (Arts)—or he might be interested in understanding the impacts of environmental degradation on human health (Health Science) or plants and animals (Science).

“Maybe he likes the idea of creating a better computer model for predicting climate change (Applied Sciences), or possibly he wants to learn how to reach out to the population in a way that inspires change (Education). Or maybe he’s keen on becoming a green entrepreneur (Business).”

He adds: “The great collaboration between our faculties has always made it possible for students to improve their job prospects by combining degree programs that cross many disciplinary boundaries.”

The event will feature student-led campus tours, special presentations and question-and-answer sessions with current students, professors and advising staff. There will be two similar events on Feb. 10 and March 18, 2009. To register: http://students.sfu.ca/tour/world.html
