Heather Kamitakahara is the first recipient of the Emaar Canada Annual Entrance Graduate Scholarship in Urban Studies. She received $2,500 towards her studies in SFU’s Masters in Urban Studies program.
Kamitakahara currently works as a planning technician for the City of Surrey. Her SFU research will focus on local economic development and how suburban municipalities are reinventing themselves in order to achieve a more sustainable urban form and character.
Kamitakahara will integrate what she learns in the classroom with what she learns in the workplace to consider practical solutions for today’s urban problems. In the future, she hopes to continue to move forward in her career in the local government sector.
Real estate developer Emaar Canada established the scholarship to help attract students to SFU’s Urban Studies program, where aspiring and practicing professionals (planners, managers, researchers, analysts and activists) learn how cities function and how they can be planned and developed more sustainably.
Students who graduate from this program will be well-suited to help Emaar Canada achieve its mission of transforming itself into a one-stop, global solution provider for lifestyle, including homes, work, play, leisure, retail, health, education, finance, industry and more.
